1. Introduction

An adjective describes the quality of a person, place, animal, thing or idea.

When we compare qualities, we use Degrees of Comparison.

- Ram is taller than Shyam.

- Ram is the tallest boy in the class.

In the above sentences, the adjective tall changes its form according to the comparison.

---

2. Types of Degrees

Positive Degree simply expresses a quality.

Structure

Subject + Verb + Adjective

Examples

- Ram is tall.

- Sita is intelligent.

- This flower is beautiful.

No comparison is made.

---

(B) Comparative Degree

Comparative Degree compares two persons, places or things.

3. Before Learning Degrees: Understand Syllables

A syllable is a unit of pronunciation.

Examples

Word| Syllables

Tall| 1

Small| 1

Happy| 2

Teacher| 2

Beautiful| 3

Important| 3

Intelligent| 4

Why Are Syllables Important?

Because they help us decide whether to use:

- -er / -est

  or

- more / most

---

4. Formation of Degrees

RULE 1: Most One-Syllable Adjectives

Logic

Short adjectives usually take:

-er

-est

Formula

Positive + er = Comparative

Positive + est = Superlative

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Tall| Taller| Tallest

Long| Longer| Longest

Short| Shorter| Shortest

Fast| Faster| Fastest

Small| Smaller| Smallest

---

RULE 2: Adjectives Ending in E

Logic

The adjective already ends in E.

Therefore only R and ST are added.

Formula

Positive + r

Positive + st

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Large| Larger| Largest

Wise| Wiser| Wisest

Nice| Nicer| Nicest

Brave| Braver| Bravest

---

RULE 3: Consonant + Y

Logic

When Y is preceded by a consonant, Y changes into I before adding ER or EST.

Formula

Consonant + Y

↓

I + ER

I + EST

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Happy| Happier| Happiest

Easy| Easier| Easiest

Heavy| Heavier| Heaviest

Busy| Busier| Busiest

Tiny| Tinier| Tiniest

Observe

happy

↓

happi + er

↓

happier

---

RULE 4: Vowel + Y

Logic

If Y is preceded by a vowel, Y remains unchanged.

Formula

Vowel + Y

↓

Keep Y

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Gray| Grayer| Grayest

Gay| Gayer| Gayest

Observe

gray

↓

gray + er

↓

grayer

---

RULE 5: Single Vowel + Single Consonant (CVC Pattern)

Logic

If a one-syllable adjective ends in:

Consonant + Vowel + Consonant

the final consonant is doubled before adding ER or EST.

Formula

CVC Pattern

↓

Double Final Consonant

↓

Add ER / EST

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Big| Bigger| Biggest

Hot| Hotter| Hottest

Fat| Fatter| Fattest

Thin| Thinner| Thinnest

Sad| Sadder| Saddest

Observe

big

↓

bigg + er

↓

bigger

---

RULE 6: Adjectives Ending with Two Consonants

Logic

When two consonants already appear at the end, doubling is unnecessary.

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Fast| Faster| Fastest

Dark| Darker| Darkest

Cold| Colder| Coldest

---

RULE 7: Two-Syllable Adjectives Ending in -Y, -ER, -OW, -LE

These usually take ER and EST.

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Happy| Happier| Happiest

Clever| Cleverer| Cleverest

Narrow| Narrower| Narrowest

Simple| Simpler| Simplest

Gentle| Gentler| Gentlest

---

RULE 8: Long Adjectives (Generally Three or More Syllables)

Logic

Long adjectives do not normally take ER or EST.

Instead, use:

More

Most

Examples

Positive| Comparative| Superlative

Beautiful| More Beautiful| Most Beautiful

Intelligent| More Intelligent| Most Intelligent

Important| More Important| Most Important

Attractive| More Attractive| Most Attractive

Comfortable| More Comfortable| Most Comfortable

---

RULE 9: Double Comparison Is Incorrect

Incorrect

❌ More better

❌ More taller

❌ Most tallest

Correct

✔ Better

✔ Taller

✔ Tallest

Only one comparative marker should be used.

---

RULE 10: Irregular Degrees

These do not follow normal rules.

Learn Them by Heart

Good| Better| Best

Well| Better| Best

Bad| Worse| Worst

Evil| Worse| Worst

Many| More| Most

Much| More| Most

Little| Less| Least

Far| Farther/Further| Farthest/Furthest
