ðŸ“˜ Q.1 Central Idea of the Poem ‘A Legend of the Northland’

The poem ‘A Legend of the Northland’ written by Phoebe Cary teaches us the importance of generosity and kindness. It tells how a greedy old woman refused food to Saint Peter and was turned into a woodpecker as punishment. The poem conveys that selfishness leads to suffering, while helping others brings true happiness and divine blessings.

📘 Q.2 How did the old lady treat Saint Peter?

The old lady was selfish and greedy. When Saint Peter, tired and hungry, asked her for a piece of cake, she baked several small cakes but could not give any to him. Her refusal to share even a small portion of food angered the saint, and as a result, he cursed her to become a woodpecker, forever searching for food.

The poem gives a clear moral lesson — we should be kind, humble, and generous. Greed and selfishness make a person miserable. True happiness lies in sharing and caring for others. God blesses those who show compassion and punishes those who lack humanity.
